Pathogenic Potential of Klebsiella and Enterococcus Pathobionts Isolated from Children with Ulcerative Colitis

This study characterizes Klebsiella and Enterococcus strains isolated from the appendix and non-inflamed colonic regions of pediatric IBD patients. Several strains from 8 IBD patients were collected, with detailed functional and genomic analyses performed on 8 strains from 2 UC patients. Whole-genome sequencing, Oxford Nanopore sequencing, and intestinal epithelial assays reveal virulence, biofilm formation, invasion, immune activation, and epigenetic modulation of pathogenic potential, providing insight into microbial drivers of IBD.
