To understand the role of SMAX1 in AM symbiosis, we conducted a comparative gene expression analysis of the smax1, relative to d3 and d3/smax1 and corresponding wild-types. Consistent with the signaling roles of SMAX1 and D3 in D14L/strigolactone signaling pathways, the loss of function mutants led to global gene expression changes in diverse biological processes including the light signaling, drought resistance and establishment of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis.
