THE ARTISTIC SPECIFICITY OF EUGÈNE SY'S HISTORICAL NOVELS WITHIN THE SYSTEM OF THE NINETEEENTH-CENTURY EUROPEAN HISTORICAL NOVEL

The article examines the artistic specificity of Eugène Sy’s historical novels within the context of the development of the nineteenth-century European historical novel. The study analyzes the formation of the historical novel as a literary genre in European literature and highlights the influence of Walter Scott’s artistic tradition on the development of French historical prose. Particular attention is paid to the genre structure of Eugène Sy’s works, which combine elements of romantic, socio-psychological, and adventure fiction. The article investigates the representation of historical epochs, the principles of depicting historical personality, and the peculiarities of the artistic chronotope in the novels Jean Cavalier ou les Fanatiques des Cévennes and Latréaumont. The research demonstrates that Eugène Sy’s historical prose reflects the transformation of the classical historical novel and reveals the growing importance of socio-philosophical isSys in nineteenth-century literature.
