For this assay, we selected 12 bacterial pathogens commonly associated with LRTI: S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, P. aeruginosa, A. baumannii, K. pneumoniae, E. cloacae, E. coli, B. cepacia, S. aureus, E. faecium, and E. faecalis. We designed a multiplex PCR assay for the identification and quantification of these pathogens while ensuring that the test can be implemented in clinical laboratories
