The WRKY66 orthologs were angiosperm-specific and underwent motif loss events and relaxed purifying selection. Knockouts of AtWRKY66 gene by CRISPR/Cas9 system resulted in decreased salt-stress tolerance and increased ABA sensitivity by regulating the expression of some salt stress- and ABA-related genes.
