Overthelastdecade,governmentagencies,academicinstitutions,industry,andothershaveconductedmanyassessmentsoftheenvironmental,health,andsafety(EHS)aspectsofnanotechnology.TheresultsofthoseeffortshavehelpedtodirectresearchontheEHSaspectsofengineerednanomaterials(ENMs).However,despitetheprogressinassessingresearchneedsanddespitetheresearchthathasbeenfundedandconducted,developers,regulators,andconsumersofnanotechnology-enabledproductsremainuncertainaboutthetypesandquantitiesofnanomaterialsincommerceorindevelopment,theirpossibleapplications,andtheirassociatedrisks.Toaddressthoseuncertainties,theEnvironmentalProtectionAgencyaskedtheNationalResearchCounciltoperformanindependentstudytodevelopandmonitortheimplementationofanintegratedresearchstrategytoaddresstheEHSaspectsofENMs.Inthisreport,theCommitteetoDevelopaResearchStrategyforEnvironmental,Health,andSafetyAspectsofEngineeredNanomaterialspresentsaconceptualframeworkfortheproposedresearchstrategyandidentifiescriticalresearchgapsandtoolsneededtoaddressthem.Thecommitteeidentifieshigh-priorityresearchthatneedstobeundertakenintheshortandlongtermandtheresourcesneeded.Thereportconcludeswithadiscussionofmechanismstoensureeffectiveimplementationofthecommittee’sresearchstrategy.Inasubsequentreport,thecommitteewillevaluateresearchprogress.
