Conservation genetics for Humboldt penguin. Spheniscus humboldti

The project 'Whole genome sequencing of Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti)' aims to develop "reference genomes". The current population of Humboldt penguin is estimated at 32,000 mature individuals in South America, and this species is classified as endangered species by IUCN. As part of ex situ conservation, Humboldt penguins are kept in zoos and aquariums around the world, and about 1900 individuals are bred in Japan. Genetic management of captive populations is important, therefore various studies have been performed, but no genome-wide analysis has been performed. We dwill develop the draft genome, and investigate genetic polymorphisms in the species. The goal of this project is preparation of genetic information to conserve Humboldt penguins.
