Thermoplasma is one of the more unusual thermophiles. Although only moderately thermophilic, growing optimally at 60℃, it is acidophilic and lacks a cell wall so that its membrane has no protection against the external conditions. Thermoplasma kamchatkensis isolated from Oil Field Uzon caldera, Kamchatka Peninsula is a third species of Thermoplasma genus. The aim of the project is to investigate the metabolism of new organism and molecular adaptations responsible for archaeal ability to survive and grow in extreme environments.
