The gerbera cultivar Ivory is a mutant branch (sport) of cultivar Estelle. Estelle carries pink flowers while Ivory flowers are white. In order to find the mutation leading to white flowers, mRNA extracted from petals was sequenced and assembled. None of the assembled transcripts is missing in Ivory, instead Ivory carries a single bp mutation in a gene encoding DFR that makes the DFR enzyme inactive.
