NRS-15461 | Reports, calculations and design, specifications and plans associated with the call for tenders for the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

This volume is comprised of the following documents which were associated with the call for tenders for the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge:(a) A copy of a report by J.J.C. Bradfield, Chief Engineer, Sydney Harbour Bridge, on his visit overseas to interview tenderers for the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This report is dated 4 October 1922. In the report he covers the opportune time for calling for tenders because of low steel prices, the possibility of a bridge toll, the method of payment of contractors, the need for the Harbour Bridge Bill to be passed before tenderers would be prepared to accept the contract, the quality of steel to be used in the bridge, the bridge design (including the benefits of the Arch design, tenders from German firms and sundry matters related to the specification. The Report is accompanied by a covering letter from the Under-Secretary.(b) A preliminary estimate for an Arch Bridge. This was prepared by J.J.C. Bradfield while on board the SS "Diogenes". The document is dated 19 September 1922.(c) A copy of the calculations for the Arch Bridge. This document is not dated.(d) A copy of the covering letter accompanying the final proof of the specification for the Sydney Harbour Bridge submitted by J.J.C. Bradfield, for the Minister's approval before calling for tenders for a Cantilever Bridge or Arch Bridge.Accompanying the above is a copy of the Under-Secretary's submission for the Minister's approval of the specification and plans. This document is dated 17 January 1923.(e) A copy of the quantities included in the specification submitted for tender. This document is not dated.(f) A printed copy of the "Contract for the construction of an Arch Bridge across Sydney Harbour from Dawes Point to Milson's Point - Tender Form". This document is signed by J.J.C. Bradfield and is dated 12 January 1921.(g) Copies of the plans of designs submitted for tender.Custody HistoryThis record series which was handed to the Archives Authority of NSW on 11 June 1968 by the Bradfield family. It was apparently an archival estray.
