This dataset result from field monitoring using an automated 3D image-based tracking system to study the behavioural interactions between the Western honey bee Apis melifera and its invasive predator the Asian hornet, Vespa velutina nigrithorax, in western France. We recorded a total of 603,259 flight trajectories and 5,175 predator-prey flight interactions leading to 126 successful predation events, representing 2.4% predation success. The data are related to the scientific paper "Poidatz, J., Chiron, G., Kennedy, P., Osborne, J., Requier, F. (2023) Density of predating Asian hornets at hives disturbs the 3D flight performance of honey bees and decreases predation success. Ecology and Evolution".
Two datasets are available:
(1) the csv file title "data.trajectory.csv" that includes all the trajectories reccorded. This file includes 603,259 ligns and 10 columns:
#ID_traj = trajectory identity number
#Date = Date of the trajectory reccord
#Hour = time of the start of the trajectory (hour : min : sec)
#Type_traj = Type of the trajectory (0 for a honey bee and 1 for a Asian hornet)
#Nat_traj = Nature of the trajectory (0 for an undefined trajectory passing trough the camera; 1 for a trajectory leaving the hive; 2 for a trajectory entering the hive)
#Max_speed = Maximum speed observed throughout the trajectory in m/sec
#Dist_Tot = Total distance traveled (odometry) in meters
#Dist_Crow = Distance traveled as the crow flies (naive distance between the point of departure and the point of arrival) in meters
#Curvature = Curvature of the trajectory based on the calculation Dist_Tot/Dist_Crow
#Hov_perc = Hovering percentage as the % of static time over the duration of the trajectory
(2) the csv file title "data.predation.success.csv" that includes the trajectories resulting in a predation success. This file includes 131 ligns and 4 columns:
#ID_traj = trajectory identity number
#Date = Date of the trajectory reccord
#Hour_catch = time of the catch event begening (hour : min : sec)
#Bee_IN_vs_OUT = orientation of the honey bee whose trajectory is looked at : IN for entering the hive, OUT for exiting the hive, NA for neither entering nor exiting the hive.
