The aim of the present essay is to interrogate the foundation of studies on popular culture in Italy. The object of the work consists of Lamberto Loria, traveler and collector who, between the nineteenth and sixteenth centuries, carried out his research not only in Italy. In particular in this study will be analyzed the contributions of Lamberto Loria on the front of the institutionalization of the discipline.
