资源简介:
Popular support for EU membership is increasingly becoming a topic of interest in academic research and the public debate. In the strive for generalization, experts in both strands often focus on general trends at the aggregated level rather than the subordinate developments at regional or national levels. This is exemplified by studies suggesting that Euroscepticism has developed from being a left-wing phenomenon to a u-shaped phenomenon with significantly higher levels at the extremes. The extent to which this characterizes all member states needs to be further investigated. Using a unique dataset consisting of 100 waves of surveys conducted in each of the (nine to twenty-eight) EU member states from 1973 to 2019, this article analyses the relative longitudinal development of Euroscepticism across the left-right spectrum within each member states and regions of member states. The results reveal significant differences across regions of EU member states and suggest that subaggregated analyses should precede analyses of general trends.
