Billings Estate Museum (Attic) - Integrated Project Dossier (2015)

Billings Estate is one of the oldest estates in the city of Ottawa as well as a focal point of the Billings area. The Billings family contributed much to the region’s history while playing a political role in the upbringing of the city. After being passed on through many generations of the family, the estate was finally bought by the City of Ottawa and made into a museum in 1975. Designated as the Billings House National Historic Site of Canada, Billings Estate is a two and a half storey, five-bay house classically built in the New England style of the Georgian period. Billings Estate, built between 1828 and 1829, was the home of the Billings family and one of the first houses built in the city of Ottawa. The family-owned much land, with the estate originally consisting of 8.3 acres overlooking the Rideau River, and holds one of Ottawa’s oldest community cemeteries. As such, Billings Estate played a key role in the development of the Billings region of today. Now a museum owned by the City of Ottawa, Billings Estate is a designated federal heritage site for its architectural, historical and cultural values under the Historic Site and Monuments Act (R.S.C., 1985, C.H.4). This project focuses specifically on the attic area. This is the Integrated Project Dossier compiled by a group of undergraduate students of the Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Program (Engineers and architects) at Carleton University for the CIVE3207 (ARCN4100) Historic Site Recording and Assessment course in 2015.
