Nigeria (2013) Desk Review On Injecting Drug Users In Nigeria

In Nigeria most at risk persons are categorized as groups whose behaviours or occupations often place them at higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV. A Person who Injects drug (PWID) is defined as any person 18 years and above who has injected drugs recreationally at least once in the past 12 months for a non-therapeutic purpose irrespective of the type of drug injected. This group is considered to be at higher risk of contracting and spreading HIV primarily through the sharing of needles and syringes, as well as practicing unsafe sex. The objectives of this review are: - To identify the reasons people inject drugs and the risk associated with this practice - To identify the prevalence of HIV among IDUs in Nigeria such practices, sexual and injecting risk. - To identify the factors that influence persons who inject drugs and possible strategies to curb substance abuse among this demographic population - To understand and make evidence based decision on HIV interventions to be carried out among PWIDs. - To identify areas of intervention where SHiPS project will be focused based on the outcome of the already done intervention gaps.
