This series was designed for distribution to the public to answer frequently asked questions in a non-technical way. This series is set out in a question and answer format and also contains pictures and diagrams. These booklets are divided into the following sections: history- which contains details of the development of the New South Wales rail network and changes to the department; track- with questions and information on gauge, type and grade; traffic; locomotives and rollingstock- current and historical locomotives and carriages; electrification; signalling; finance; and miscellaneous- which contains information on topics such as the Railway Ambulance Corps.These booklets were published as ‘Railway Quiz’ in 1946, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1962, 1966 and 1972. The title was changed to ‘Transport Quiz’ with the next published booklet in 1978.The Transport Quiz was divided into the following five parts: · Part 1- Railways- which contains sections on history; track; operations; locomotives and rollingstock; electrical; and signalling and communications · Part 2- Trams and Trolley Buses · Part 3- Buses · Part 4- Ferries and Hydrofoils · Part 5- MiscellaneousIt would appear some of the quiz booklets were created by the Public Relations Section and the Information Bureau of the Department of Railways.Custody History From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as part of series R340 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
