VPRS 17950 Male Prisoner Registration Cards

The cards were created to provide a sentencing history and a physical description record of a prisoner that could be transferred between prisons. During this period it operated as a prison within the Penal Department. In 1965 it was transferred to the Youth Welfare Division of the Social Welfare Branch, Chief Secretary's Department. Langi Kal Kal changed from being a prison to become a youth training centre.Typically each card would contain a photograph of the prisoner, date of birth, place of birth (state or country), physical description, religion, education, occupation, home address, details of offences, date of convictions, sentences and Court where sentenced. The cards provide details of the prisons in which sentences were served, the date from when the prisoner arrived at Langi Kal Kal, and the date on which the prisoner was released, paroled or transferred to another institution. Prior convictions are recorded on the back of the cards. Most of the prisoners were on detention at Pentridge Prison prior to their transfer to Langi Kal Kal.Some cards had been registered with a number in the form of an annual single number.
