As of 2023, the number of unicorns worldwide reached approximately 1,400, with North America and Asia Pacific accounting for nearly 90 percent of all unicorns worldwide. As of April 2024, the tech company ByteDance was not only the highest valued unicorn in China but also worldwide.In the Asia Pacific region, China was home to the majority of unicorns followed by India and South Korea.A unicorn company is a privately owned startup that has a current valuation of one billion U.S. dollars or over. Once a company has gone public (IPO) or has been acquired it is no longer termed as a unicorn.
