Kulliyyây-i-Sa’dî. This manuscript is now IO Islamic 1121 in the India Office collections. [metadata: Hermann Ethé, Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, 2 vols. (Oxford: India Office, 1903): volume 1, number 178 here with notations and hyperlinks]. 1121 The same. Contents: 1.The collector’s preface, on fol. 1b, beginning as usual. There is an index, on fol. 2b, according to which this collection is to be divided into seven risâlas and sixteen kitâbs, the latter consisting of The preliminary words of this index (comp. on the various modifications of the text, Rosen, Persian MSS., pp. 176-180) run here in a very short and inconsistent way, thus, on fol. In the copy itself no trace of this division is found, beyond the seven risâlas, the Gulistân, and Bûstân. 2.Seven risâlas, i.e. the usual six and the مجلس هزل, or the first of the three mock homilies counted as seventh; first risâlah, on fol. 2b margin; second (here must be read رسالۀ دوم instead of رسالۀ اوّل ), in five majlis, on ff. 5b, 7a margin, 10a, 11a, and 13a; third, on fol. 17a margin; fourth, on fol. 18b (در عقل و عشق, or as it is styled in the index: در عقل و عشق و رجحان عشق بر عقل) ; fifth, on fol. 20a; sixth, containing in this copy the second story only, در نصيحت انكيانو, on fol. 26a; seventh, on fol. 27a margin, beginning (as in No. 683 in the Bodleian Cat., col. 3.Gulistân, on fol.30b. 4.Bûstân, or Sa’dînâma, on fol. 5.Dîwân (ديوان), consisting of: a.Ḳaṣîdas, the first of which is an Arabic one, beginning, on fol. 167b: . The second, or first Persian one, begins in the usual way: شكر و سپاس و منّت الخ b.Marâthî, on fol. 191b, beginning like the Tarjî’ât in the preceding copy: غريبانرا دل از مهر تو خونست الخ. c.Tarjî’ât, on fol. 200a, beginning: .اى زلف تو الخ d.Ghazals, in alphabetical order, comprising the Ṭayyibât, Bâdâ’i’, Khawâtîm, and early ghazals, exactly as No. 8 in the preceding copy, on fol. 206b margin. Beginning: سپاس و حمد بى پايان خدارا الخ (which is usually the initial bait of the Khwâtîm, see No. 1118 in this Cat., fol. 412b). e.Muḳaṭṭa’ât, in alphabetical order, on fol. This poem is included in some copies in the Ṣâḥibiyyah, see, for instance, No. 694 in the Bodleian Cat., col. 540, and W. Pertsch, p. 97, No. 70. The initial ḳiṭ’ah of No. 1117 in this Cat., is found here on fol. 340a, l. 3 sq. f.Rubâ’îs (not separated by a special heading from the Muḳaṭṭa’ât), beginning apparently, on fol. 348b margin, with a quatrain in the metre of هزج ( مفاعيلن مفاعيلن فعولن ) : جهانرا الخ تدبير ( خداونديست) خداوندى است (see the same initial rubâ’î further down in No. 1127 in this Cat.); the first rubâ’î , in the orthodox metre, begins, on fol. 349a, as in No. 687 of the Bodleian Cat., col. 535, No. 23: اسيرند بيا الخ (read according to metre بدرگهت)عشّاق بدرگۀ تو. g.Muṭâyahât or Khabithât (here incorrectly styled فى الهزل و المزاخ), on fol. 356a margin; beginning of the prose-preface:قال السّعدى الزمنى بعض الخ. The first poem is identical with that in No. 1117 in this Cat.: خوش بود عيش الخ. h.Short mathnawîs (see No. 1120 in this Cat., in the part of the Mulamma’ât and the remark there-upon) here styled Naṣâ’iḥ (نصائح), or admonitions, and beginning, on fol. There are wanting in this copy the Arabic ḳaṣîdas, except the one at the beginning of No. 5, the Mulama’ât, the Ṣâḥibiyyah, the Hazliyyât, the Mufradât, and the Muḍḥikât. It is dated the 20th of Ramaḍân, A.H. 1039 (A.D. 1630, May 3), by Ḥasan Muḥammad ibn Shîr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Jiw ibn Yûsuf. The copy was formerly in the possession of Sayyid Ḳuṭbi-khân, who bought it for twenty-five rupees. No. 178, ff. 364, 2 centre-coll., each ll. 14, and a third on the margin, ll. 13; Nasta’lîḳ; illuminated frontispieces on ff. 1b, 30b, 86b, and 167b; size, 11 in. by 6¼ in.
