Montana Colstrip Steam Electric Station Coal Ash Cleanup Area

The Department of Environmental Quality is engaged in an enforcement action against Talen Energy (formerly PPL Montana) over groundwater contamination caused by leaking ash ponds at the Colstrip Steam Electric Station Plant. The investigation and remediation steps Talen must take to address these environmental problems are outlined in an Administrative Order on Consent (AOC), which both parties agreed to in 2012. This layer includes the general investigation and remediation area that the Colstrip Steam Electric Station AOC covers; however, the remediation activities are on-going and the area may be adjusted if contamination is found outside these boundaries.
