This study's aim is to understand how pathogenic bacteria can evolve into intracellular endosymbionts. We propagated Serratia symbiotica bacteria that are culturable relatives of aphid endosymbionts in the laboratory to attempt to attenuate their virulence, examined how their genomes evolved, and tested whether these changes allowed them to be stably inherited across aphid generations.
