VPRS 16940 By-Laws

This series contains the original sealed parchment copies of the City of Melbourne by-laws. All by-laws created were sealed by Council and signed by both the Town Clerk and the Lord Mayor of the day.The Council's act of constitution in 1842 outlined responsibilities relating to justices, butchers, markets, roads, police and sewerage, and gave power to make by-laws and to regulate nuisances.Councils are empowered to make and enforce by-laws on a wide range of matters including road and traffic regulation, building construction, health, drainage, sanitation, environmental protection and planning.Over the years, the City of Melbourne by-laws were often amended, added to or repealed.
