A protected natural area is a clearly defined, recognised, dedicated and managed geographical area, by any effective legal or other means, in order to ensure the long-term conservation of nature and the ecosystem services and cultural values associated with it. There is a great diversity of protected natural areas in France: protection order, national park biological reserve, nature reserve, regional natural park, marine natural park, sensitive natural areas, land acquired by a conservatory of natural areas or by the conservatory of the coast...
The data on protected natural areas contain descriptive elements (name of the site, dates of creation, renewal or modification, commune(s), region(s), surface, official text, fauna-flora-habitats data, etc.) and geographical elements (GIS layers).
