资源简介:
Makua Valley is situated on the west side of the island of Oahu. This dry
area is located in the leeward rain shadow of the Waianae Mountains. Modern
vegetation includes primarily grass, which is maintained by annual burning. The
surrounding slopes and ridges of the valley are forested with a variety of trees
typical of leeward Hawai' i, including Kaa haole (Leucaena), Kiawe (Prosopis), and
Kukul (Aleurites). Pollen and charcoal samples were examined from this column
to provide a baseline study and determine the state of pollen preservation.
Examination of charcoal was undertaken to observe whether the charcoal may be
moving down through the profile as a result of wetting and drying, which produces
cracks in the local sediment.
