The invention relates to a device (10， 100) for handling and/or machining a workpiece (1) having a non-metal surface， said device comprising: a workpiece identification component (20) which is designed to irradiate electromagnetic radiation inside the workpiece (1) and to receive electromagnetic radiation reflected from the inside of the workpiece (1); and a data processing unit (30) designed to determine information from the inside of the workpiece (1) on the basis of measured data of the reflected electromagnetic radiation. The invention also relates to a method that can be used to determine a characteristic material parameter， preferably a component-specific reflection value of the workpiece (1)， on the basis of the received electromagnetic radiation.
