The migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, a worldwide insect pest, shows remarkable phenotypic plasticity called phase transition, which is dependent on population density changes. Body color is one of the most obvious traits to examine to evaluate the phase state of the migratory locust.To systematically examine the functions and roles of pathways and genes that regulate phase-specific body color changes of the migratory locust, we used a strand-specific high-throughput RNA sequencing to monitor genome-wide transcriptional expression profiles and detect differentially expressed genes and their regulation between the two phases.
