The genome sequencing and assembly of the Song Sparrow, Melospiza melodia is an initiative to expand biomedical research beyond the existing suite of model organisms. The Song Sparrow is one of the most widespread species across North America, with pronounced phenotypic variation which makes it an interesting new model species to be employed for research in diverse areas of biomedicine.
