Anual Prices of wheat and wine in Girona (1725-1807)

Supplementary material for the chapter “Explaining the consumption–wage paradox: property rights and agricultural intensification in north-eastern Catalonia, 1720–1807”. The purpose of this study is to account for how, during the eighteenth century, agricultural workers in the Girona region were able to increase their level of material consumption —as inferred from the goods recorded in their post-mortem inventories— while real wages —deflated by the price of wheat— indicate a decline in their purchasing power. Among other variables, the study examines the evolution of relative prices, which constitute the materials made publicly available here. L'objectiu del treball és explicar com va ser possible que, durant el segle XVIII, els treballadors de la regió de Girona augmentessin el seu nivell de consum material —segons es dedueix dels objectes continguts en els seus inventaris postmortem— alhora que els salaris reals —deflactats amb el preu del blat— revelen una davallada del seu poder de compra. Entre altres variables, s'examina l'evolució dels preus relatius, que són els materials que es dipositen en obert.
