From 2009 to 2013, rapid-growing non tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) was isolated from thread-sail filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer) and black scraper (Thamnaconus modestus). This NTM have pathogenicity to these two specie of marine teleost fish. The representative strain NJB0901T is acid-fast and growth is observed following incubation for 3-5 days at 30 degrees C. Colonies can be either rough or smooth, with no pigmentation regardless of exposure to light. Based on the results of multi locus sequence typing and molecular phylogenetic analysis, the piscine isolates represent a novel species of M. chelonae-M. abscessus group mycobacteria, for which the name Mycobacterium stephanolepidis.
