This statistic illustrates the percentage of people who use a smartphone in the Netherlands from 2012 to 2016. In 2016, 80 percent of people in the Netherlands reported using a smartphone, up from just 43 percent in 2012.Smartphone use is the most prevalent among those aged 13-19 years old and 20-34 years old. In 2016, 95.7 percent of people 13-19 years of age and 95.3 percent of people who were 20-34 years of age, reported using smartphones. This number falls to 29.6 percent among those aged 65 years or older.The Netherlands also has the second highest mobile internet penetration rate of any nation. At 89 percent, the Netherland's share of mobile internet users as a percentage of the total population is slightly behind Japan, where 90 percent of the population report using some form of mobile internet. In Australia 76 percent of the population use some form of mobile internet, and in the United States 73 percent of the population use mobile devices to access the internet.Generally speaking, mobile internet traffic as a proportion of total internet traffic in Europe is lower than anywhere else in the world. In Africa, 59.49 percent of total web traffic originates from a mobile device. Globally this number sits at 49.73 percent, while in Europe just 31.65 percent of web traffic originates from mobile devices.
