Models were fitted by stepwise inclusion of fixed effects. The first columns show results of likelihood-ratio tests that were applied to assess model improvement (Chi2) and the statistical significance of the explanatory terms (Species = species identity, Diversity = monoculture vs. mixture), where* P ≤ 0.05,** P *** P Arrows indicate increases (↑) or decreases (↓) in trait values in mixture compared to monocultures. Tukey`s test was applied for multiple pair-wise comparisons of sample means per species.
