The efflux status of Salmonella enterica serovar typhi alters which mutations are selected for in the presence of ciprofloxacin. Strains lacking RND efflux were found to have a novel G81C mutation in gyrA, which is not seen in wild-type strains and has not been described in clinical isolates. Modelling suggests that the G81C mutation affects the binding of DNA to DNA-gyrase.
