This register records details about the re-interment of remains, and in some cases monuments, from Devonshire Street Cemetery following its resumption to make way for the development of Central Railway Station.The entries are grouped by "division" comprising religious denomination, and within this are arranged alphabetically by the first letter of the surname. Details provided include Devonshire Street Cemetery number, name of deceased, date of death, Cemetery where re-interred, with division, section, and number, name and address of person to whom exhumation permit issued, and remarks. If next of kin did not apply for exhumation and re-interment at another cemetery remains were exhumed by order of the Department of Public Works and re-interred by the Department at a new cemetery at La Perouse (now Botany Cemetery).The Public Works Department assumed responsibility for the cost of exhumation, removal, and re-interment of remains, and the transfer of any monuments and headstones. The remains and monuments were removed to a number of different metropolitan cemeteries, as well as to a small number of country cemeteries.
