Poleward and equatorward boundaries of the auroral oval in the northern hemisphere between 2000–2002. The file detected_boundaries.h5 contains initially detected boundaries, the file modeled_boundaries.h5 contains modeled boundaries and the file selected_boundaries.h5 contains boundaries selected as “good” to be included in statistical considerations. The full code with documentation of code and file variables are available at https://github.com/aohma/fuvpy/ and a published version is available from https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8085691. A paper describing the method of derivation of the auroral boundaries is in preparation.
The boundaries are identified from Far-Ultraviolet (FUV) images of the aurora provided by the The Wideband Imaging Camera (WIC) on the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) mission. We thank S. B. Mende and the IMAGE FUV team at the Space Sciences Laboratory at UC Berkeley for the IMAGE FUV data. The original images can be accessed at https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/data/image/fuv/ and were processed using the FUVIEW3 software available from http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/image/. The images have been corrected for background emissions using the method described in https://doi.org/10.26464/epp2023051.
