Syntrophaceticus schinkii is a mesophilic Syntrophic Acetate Oxidizing Bacterium (SAOB), capable to oxidize acetate to hydrogen and CO2 by using the reductive acetyl-CoA (Wood-Ljungdahl) pathway in co-cultivation with a hydrogen-consuming methanogen. The methanogenic partner as the end product of this peculiar Syntrophic relationship finally produces methane. S. schinkii strain sp3 belongs to the Firmicutes-Clostridia class.
