Smyrna/Izmir (Turkey), gift from L.P. Spiegelthal, 1873Marble, around 150 BC Nakedness, serpent and weapons characterize the deceased as a hero and transpose him into an ideal, glorified sphere. The servants symbolize his social status and high living standard. The iconography of the naked warrior hero, cloak draped over shoulder and arm, finds its parallels in the image of rulers. This object is part of Scan The World.
