In this study, a world-wide collection of 290 wild and cultivated beet accessions was selected. Our study sheds light on the genetic diversity and composition of cultivated and wild beets, revealing the impact of domestication and intensive breeding on the beet genome. It is the first comprehensive, whole-genome study investigating population structure with a specific focus on cultivated beets with an enlarged storage taproot. We explore their demographic history, genomic regions with reduced genetic diversity due to artificial selection, and investigate putative candidate genes involved in storage root formation and the repression of lateral root branches. This study establishes a foundation for further genetic and molecular investigations to dissect the genetics behind the thickening of storage roots in beets. The Beta mini-core collection offers future prospects for genetic studies aimed at dissecting the genetics behind various agronomically important traits.
