Tomato is one of the most popular and extensively consumed vegetable crops in the world. Despite the world production of tomato has been increased over years, the pre- and post-harvest losses are still tremendous, especially in developing countries. China is the leading country for tomato cultivation, however, the fruit production is largely influenced by viral diseases. Understanding the diversity, distribution and evolution of viruses in major tomato growing areas, such as China, is of great importance to disease management and crop safety. To gain a comprehensive viral landscape in tomato in China, we sampled 170 field tomato plants with viral-infection symptoms across twenty tomato growing areas. Small RNAs of each sample were extracted and sequenced, a computational pipeline was then applied for virus detection in all the samples.
