Occupational Cement Dust Exposure and Hepatic Function Profiles in Bricklayers

This dataset accompanies the manuscript “Occupational Cement Dust Exposure and Hepatic Function Profiles in Bricklayers” submitted to the International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health (IAOEH). It contains de-identified participant-level data from a comparative cross-sectional study of male bricklayers occupationally exposed to cement dust in Southwestern Nigeria and demographically similar community controls. The dataset includes: Demographics: age, BMI, years in trade (for exposed group). Health behaviors: alcohol intake, smoking history (all exclusionary for analysis). Biomarkers: total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, derived globulin, and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). Processed variables: log-transformed GGT (ln-GGT) for skew-aware analyses; Hedges’ g effect sizes computed in main analysis. Key features: Laboratory assays were performed in a single reference laboratory using IFCC-aligned methods. Data are fully anonymized; no personally identifiable information is included. Provides raw values, derived indicators, and analytic-ready transformations used in the manuscript’s statistical analyses (Welch’s t-tests, geometric mean ratios, effect sizes). Value of the data: First dataset to provide liver-function biomarker profiles in a cement-exposed workforce in Nigeria, a high-burden occupational setting with limited surveillance data. Enables reproducibility of published analyses and provides a platform for meta-analyses on dust exposure and systemic organ function. Useful for occupational health researchers, environmental epidemiologists, and policy makers interested in linking dust exposure to systemic (non-respiratory) outcomes. File format: Excel (.xlsx), with one sheet for raw biomarker data and another for derived/processed variables.
