High-resolution European soil property maps based on LUCAS and AlphaEarth Foundations satellite embeddings

General Information The dataset can be found under this link: https://igeocloud.boku.ac.at/index.php/s/9KQqb8pxPrArTta It includes maps of soil texture (sand, silt, clay), coarse fragments, pH and bulk density. The values represent the 0-20 cm depth level of soil. Additionally, model uncertainty maps for each soil property are available. Spatially, the maps cover the surface area of all 27 EU member states, as well as the United Kingdom with a spatial resolution of 10 metres. Temporally, they were made with covariates from 2018, based on LUCAS soil sample data from 2009 (texture + coarse) or 2018 (pH + bulk density). Description of the data in the dataset For each included soil property, we provide the property map as well as the uncertainty map as cloud-optimized GeoTiff (COG) files. Each soil property folder includes one COG for each of the 122 tiles that cover Europe (see Fig. 3 of the paper). The projection is always WGS84 (EPSG:4326). In each tile of the bulk density, pH and coarse maps, the first band of the GeoTiff contains the soil property values, while the second band, called "uncertainty", contains the model uncertainty estimation of the soil property values. In the case of soil texture files, the sand, silt and clay values are the first three bands, while their respective uncertainty estimates are bands four through six. Before using the soil property maps, the property values as well as the uncertainty estimates must each be scaled by multiplying them with the "scale_value" and "scale_error" value, respectively, given in the file metadata. This is due to the format which the values are saved in, 8-bit integer, for efficient storage. Cells in which both the soil property value as well as the uncertainty are 0 can be considered empty. After scaling, the texture fraction values are mapped in %, as well as coarse fragments, pH values are without unit and bulk density are mapped in g/cm³.
