This dataset accompanies the manuscript “Optimizing microhistological effort: How many epidermal fragments are enough to estimate herbivore diet?” from European Journal of Wildlife Research. It contains data from 141 independent red deer (Cervus elaphus) fecal samples collected in the Lousã Mountain, central Portugal, across four seasons: rut, autumn, winter and spring. The samples were obtained from females, males and calves.
