These magazines were produced monthly for the information and entertainment of Railway staff. The publication provided service news to employees about the industrial, educational and sporting activities of the railways in New South Wales. The magazine also included articles of interest from overseas. The magazine regularly included the following information: appointments and promotions; reports of staff sporting events, usually with photographs; notification of educational courses offered at the Railway Institute; articles about projects being undertaken by the railway; and notification of new library books. The magazine also contains advertisements from Sydney businesses.The volumes contain an index at the front, except volumes 21, 23, and 24 where it is located at the back of the volume. The volumes contain twelve editions of the magazine and the index covers the entire twelve-month period. Each magazine has a list of contents on the first page. The publication underwent a number of title changes, beginning as the NSW Railway Budget on 15 September 1892, renamed the NSW Railway & Tramway Budget on 1 March 1912, and finally being renamed the NSW Railway & Tramway Magazine on 1 December 1917. Despite these name changes, the content, style, format, and frequency of publication of the series remained the same.In January 1924, the Railway & Tramway magazine was replaced by The Staff. The new publication incorporated the magazine with The Commissioners’ Monthly Bulletin and the Safety First Pamphlet.Custody HistoryFrom 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R67. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R67 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works. State Rail series R67 was separated into 14 individual series.
