Migration and Residence Survey ´On Coming, Going and Staying´ (KoBaLd)

The representative population survey on residential location decisions was conducted by infas Institute for Applied Social Science on behalf of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries. In the survey period from 18.06.2020 to 26.09.2020, the German-speaking population aged 18 and over living in private households was surveyed in telephone interviews (CATI), for which one of five types of residential location decisions applied. The focus of the survey was on migration, but also on “non-migration”, i.e. staying in one place. The focus was on both rural and non-rural areas. The respondents were selected using a multi-stage random sample from an ADM selection frame including landline and mobile phone numbers (dual-frame sample).<br>Screening questions: Move within the last 5 years; move to this municipality 5 years or less ago; move of a household member within the last 5 years; target person on the phone; spatial type of current place of residence (non-rural/rural); spatial type before the move; always lived here or moved here; year of move; residential location decision; type of questionnaire section.

Local ties (e.g. I like living in this region, I could just as well live in another region, I would prefer never to move away from this region)
I would never want to move away from this region, I find the landscape in this region beautiful, etc.).

Residential biography: previously lived in the place of residence or previously lived in the current region (25 km radius); moved once or several times within the municipality of residence; time of last move (year); time of last move in years and months; total frequency of moves; frequency of moves within the current city/municipality; area around current/last place of residence more rural or urban; place of childhood more rural or urban.

Current living situation: housing status; type of residential building; living space; information on living space certain or estimated; multi-local living: more frequent overnight stays in another accommodation or in several accommodations; reason for using another accommodation (e.g. partner lives there, job or training position is there, etc.).

Household at the time immediately after the move: Situation after the move in terms of: Household size; household members (household composition); number of own children in the household; number of non-own children in the household, number of siblings, grandchildren, related/ in-laws and non-related/ in-laws in the household.

Living situation at the time of the decision to move (or shortly before the move): Housing status before the decision to move; living space; estimated living space before the decision to move; comparison of the living space at that time with the current living space.

Housing situation at the time immediately after the move: Housing status after moving to the municipality; living space after moving to the municipality; estimated living space after moving to the municipality.

Current desire to move; planned move within the next 24 months; planned move out of the municipality; question about moving out of the municipality already asked once or more than once.
