Immersive virtual reality exposure for reducing preoperative anxiety in children - Clinical trial data

This dataset contains the clinical trial data reported in the manuscript "Immersive virtual reality exposure for reducing preoperative anxiety in children - a randomized controlled trial" by Kwok et al. The data captures both demographic information and assessment outcomes for paediatric participants.

- Study Design -

- Folder Structure and File Organisation -
The dataset is organized into a hierarchical directory structure based on the study groups. The Root directory contains two main subfolders:
(1) Root > VR: Contains data for participants allocated to the VR group (N=34).
(2) Root > control: Contains data for participants allocated to the control group (N=38).
Each subfolder (VR and control) contains two Comma-Separated Values (CSV) files:
(i) Demographic Data (VR_demographics.csv or control_demographics.csv) - This file contains the demographics of the participants.
(ii) Assessment Results (VR_assessment.csv or control_assessment.csv) - This file contains the primary and secondary outcome measures.

- Data Columns -
VR_demographics.csv or control_demographics.csv:
* Code: Unique anonymized identifier.
* Age: Age of the participant (in years).
* Sex: Biological sex.
* ASA: American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification system score, indicating the patient's pre-anaesthesia medical comorbidities.
* Subspecialty: The surgical subspecialty under which the participant was treated.
* Adm Date: Admission date.
* Surg Date: Date of the surgical procedure.
VR_assessment.csv or control_assessment.csv:
* Code: Unique anonymized identifier (links to the demographics file).
* ICC: Induction Compliance Checklist score at anaesthesia induction.
* PBRS: Procedural Behaviour Rating Scale score at anaesthesia induction.
* mYPAS-T0: Modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale score measured at admission).
* mYPAS-T1: Modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale score measured at anaesthesia induction).
* STAI-T: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory score (Trait subscale).
* STAI-S: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory score (State subscale).
* PSS-PAC: Parental Satisfaction Score regarding pre-anaesthetic assessment clinic services.
* PSS-Preop: Parental Satisfaction Score regarding pre-op management services.
* PSS-Intraop: Parental Satisfaction Score regarding intra-op management services.
* PSS-Postop: Parental Satisfaction Score regarding post-op management services.
* PSS-Total: The aggregate Parental Satisfaction Score across all service phases.

- Data Processing -
All direct identifiers have been removed to protect participant privacy. Participants are identified solely by random codes. Missing values are represented by empty cells. The dataset includes only the data from participants who were included in the final analyses (N=72).

- Research Ethics -
This study was approved by the Hospital Authority Central Institutional Review Board and was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov.
