2023年の中国の一次エネルギー消費は、170.7エクサジュール（10の18乗ジュール、以下EJ）で、中国は世界最大のエネルギー消費国です。中国の一次エネルギー消費は、2位の米国を遥かに上回っています。一次エネルギー燃料の供給は、依然として石油や石炭などの化石燃料が大半を占めます。 
中国のエネルギーミックス 
中国の一次エネルギーミックスは、最大の割合を占めてきた石炭の使用を控え、天然ガスと持続可能エネルギーの割合を拡大する方向へと動いています。2009年以降、エネルギー消費に占める持続可能エネルギーの割合は、約16パーセント増えました。一次エネルギー消費は、過去10年間で世界的に増加したものの、最大の増加率が見込まれているのは、BRIC諸国（ブラジル、ロシア、インド、中国）などの新興経済国においてです。 
一次エネルギーとは 
一次エネルギーとは、原油、天然ガス、石炭、風力など、転換・加工されない状態で供給される自然由来のエネルギーのことです。たとえば原油は、精製することでガソリンやディーゼルなどの二次エネルギーが得られ、電力を発生させるのに使われる風力は、それ自体が二次エネルギーの源です。一国の一次エネルギー総供給量からは、その国の主要なエネルギー源を特定できます。一方で、最終エネルギー消費は、産業活動や家庭などで実際に消費されたエネルギーの量を示す数値で、天然ガスなどの一次エネルギーと電気やガソリンなどの二次エネルギーの両方が含まれます。

China's primary energy consumption far surpasses that of the second-largest consumer, the United States. The supply of primary energy fuels still predominantly consists of fossil fuels such as oil and coal. The energy mix in China is shifting towards a reduction in the use of coal, which has historically accounted for the largest share, and an expansion in the proportion of natural gas and renewable energy. Since 2009, the share of sustainable energy in energy consumption has increased by approximately 16 percent. While primary energy consumption has increased globally over the past decade, the largest expected increase is in emerging economies such as the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China). Primary energy refers to naturally occurring energy sources that are supplied in their unconverted and unprocessed state, such as crude oil, natural gas, coal, and wind power. For instance, crude oil can be refined into secondary energy forms like gasoline and diesel, while wind power itself is a source of secondary energy. The total supply of primary energy in a country can identify its main energy sources. On the other hand, final energy consumption indicates the amount of energy actually consumed in activities such as industrial production and households, and includes both primary energy sources like natural gas and secondary energy sources like electricity and gasoline.
