Marcello Veneziani’s essay, Dio, Patria e famiglia is one of those type of texts you are forced to take an interest in, as the 'state of consciousness' of our time comes from it. We are living in an time which has neither reference points nor guarantees, a time made of nothing, which the Author deplores. As a matter of fact, in spite of its appearances, the nothing is susceptible to give its contents to a knowledge which will be able to get rid of it hereafter to the benefit of the whole civilization. In other words, to be sure that there is nothing, rather than to be sure of nothing. Neither traditions nor values because they are denied, one after the other, without being replaced by new ones. However, the fact that the man denies them does not mean that our need of roots has become less strong. Maybe this is the whole paradox of the modern man: to destroy without being able to reconstruct, to move away from the traditions without totally give up to his need to be attached to something - God, home, family, some guarantees which are necessary to make him feel like he belongs to the world instead of being a simple passenger; in one simple word, to have an identity. But which God? Which Home? Which Family? What is, now, the content of these concepts? Without Humanity, Religion has become nothing more than Fanaticism. Family, established as an absolute value, has become a makeshift cell against a world in decline; Home, considered a Divinity, is nothing more than Idolatry which justify libertarian ideals, nevertheless unable to create new values under the sign of the community, and worsening the feeling of loss of a national identity, and above all witnessing a 'loss', the loss of a 'center' to which to cling to and empathize together. Only finding again this center, God, Home, and Family which could be shared as they have been lived individually in freedom, it would be possible to escape the horror vacui.
