English Olfactory Lexicon for Natural Language Processing and Text Analysis

This dataset presents an English-language olfactory lexicon. The lexicon contains 857 terms related to olfactory experience, structured across two main taxonomic dimensions: evaluative character (positive, negative, neutral valence) and odour source (natural, artificial, food/taste, drinks, botanical, animal, human, and environmental sources). Entries with character_eval=1 and no valence column populated represent terms where evaluative valence is intentionally unassigned due to documented cross-individual or cross-cultural variability in olfactory perception. Terms are drawn from multiple sources, including perfumery and fragrance sites, and botanical and gardening sites. British and American English spelling variants are retained as separate entries to ensure broad corpus coverage. The lexicon is provided in several formats, including DICX (LIWC-22 native format), CSV, XLSX, JSON, NDJSON, JSON-LD, XML, along with a README.
