The lyrical poems of Muḥammad Ṭâlib (in the colophon of the present copy Ṭâlibâ) of Âmul in Mâzandarân, who came to India in the beginning of Jahângîr’s reign, and rose to the rank of king of poets under that emperor; he went to Fatḥpûr A.H. 1029 (A.D. 1620), and died, according to the best authorities, A.H. 1035 (A.D. 1625, 1626), comp. Two later dates of his death, viz. A.H. 1036 (A.D. 1626, 1627) and 1040 (A.D. 1630, 1631) are given, the former in the Khulâṣat-alafkâr, No. 163 (col. 308 in the Bodleian Cat.), the Dîwân-i-Muntakhab of Sirâj (see A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 151), and the Shâhid-i-ṣâdik (see Rieu iii. p. 1091a); the latter in the Khazâna-i-’âmirah, No. 73 (col. 258 in the Bodleian Cat.), and the Ṭabaḳât-i-Shâhjahânî, see also A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 90 (where Ṭâhir Naṣrâbâdî calls him king of poets under Shâhjahân). He was a cousin of Ḥakîm Ruknâ or Rukn-aldîn Mas’ûd Masîh (who died, according to the best authorities, A.H. 1066=A.D. 1655, 1656, see Nos. 1572 and 1573 in this Cat.). Contents: Ḳaṣîdas in praise of Jahângîr, on fol. 1b, beginning: چون کج نهم بفرق خرد افسر بیان زنم بر سر زبان(Rieu اطاقه) از مدح شه اتاقه Ḳiṭ’as, on fol. 79a, beginning: ايا ستوده صفاتى كه از گل وصفت كلاه گوشۀ انديشه گلشن است مرا Tarkîbbands, on fol. 100a, beginning: اى رويتو رنگ و روی بستان وى عكس لب تو سايۀ جان Mathnawiyyât, on fol. 119a, beginning (as in Aumer’s copy): شنيدم روزى از طرز آشنائى عروس نكته را برقع گشائى The mathnawî, noticed in Rieu iii. p. 1001b, on a hunting excursion of Jahângîr, is not found in this collection; another mathnawî by Ṭâlib Âmulî is mentioned ib. ii. p. 738a. Ghazals, in alphabetical order, on fol. 125b, beginning: بايما نكته مى سنجد نميدانم زبانش را خدايا فيض الهامى كه در يابم بيانش را Rubâ’îs, on fol. 252b, beginning: در سينه نفس يوسف زندان غمست در ديده نگاه پیر كنعان غمست No date. The colophon runs thus: اتمام يافت ديوان شاه طالبا’. No. 858, ff. 295, 2 coll., each ll. 17; written by different hands, partly in careful, partly in careless Nasta’lîḳ; size, 111/8 in. by 53/4 in.
