Early life determinants of the development of gut microbiome composition in infancy have been widely investigated, however whether these determinants have a persistent influence on the gut microbial community after its stabilization at later childhood remains largely unknown. In this study, we aimed at identifying environmental exposures to tobacco and mercury from the prenatal period to childhood that contribute to individual differences in fecal microbiome composition in seven-year-old children from the Spanish INMA birth cohort.
