Spatially Aggregated IEEE Power Outage Data for the United States

The IEEE power outage dataset for the United States provides outage-related data aggregated at the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) region level from 1989 to 2023. This dataset, compiled from utility-reported data using SCADA and outage reporting systems, includes detailed daily metrics such as the number of utilities with outages, number of outages, Customers Interrupted (CI), and Customer Minutes Interrupted (CMI). Additionally, the dataset distinguishes between transmission- and distribution-related outages and flags Major Event Days (MEDs). While raw data is collected at the utility level, it is aggregated at the regional level to maintain the anonymity of individual utilities. The dataset also includes annual utility customer coverage information, reporting the total number of utility customers and the total utility count for each NERC region.
